Catechism of the Catholic Church 1210 Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life:1 they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian's life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life. BaptismPreferably before the birth of your child, contact Deacon Mike for initial preparation and to schedule a Baptism date. Baptism preparation classes will be the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Anointing of the SickHe summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two…They anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. (See Mark 6:7-13) Are there any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the Church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up, and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15) The Sacrament of Anointing is given to those who are seriously ill by anointing them on the forehead and hands with duly blessed oil – pressed from olives and other plants – and saying only once – “Through his holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up.” CCC, 1513 The Sacrament of Anointing is the sacrament for those Christians whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, whether in body, mind or spirit. Those needing the sacrament are encouraged to request it at the beginning of a serious illness or operation. Like Reconciliation and the Eucharist this sacrament may be received more than once. At our parishes there is a communal anointing celebration in the fall and spring of the year. However, anytime the effects of illness or old age bring further impairment, one may request the sacrament. Once this sacrament was conferred more exclusively on those at the point of death (Extreme Unction or last anointing). However, the current practice is to provide it for anyone in need. The power of this sacrament may bring improvement in health, but also provides the spiritual strength needed to cope with the effects of illness.
To request the sacrament for yourself or a loved one, please contact Sr. Toni at the Quad-Parish Office (496-2160).
